Affordable Dental Crowns in San Diego

Dental crowns are a type of dental restoration that cover damaged or decayed teeth with a natural-looking prosthetic cap down to the gumline. Once in place, dental crowns look and function like real teeth. There are several dental conditions that can be addressed with dental crowns, and the procedure can be customized to fit your needs and budget.  Give us a call at (619) 263-6683.

When do you need a dental crown?

Dental crowns are often used to address cosmetic concerns, but restoring basic function to a damaged tooth is also a common reason for the procedure. Typically, dental crowns are used to:

  • Restore broken or decayed teeth
  • Protect weak teeth from future damage
  • Cover discolored or misshapen teeth
  • Cover a cavity that is too large for a traditional filling

Dental crowns are also used to anchor dental bridges, which fill in gaps made by missing teeth. In this procedure, the crown is placed on the tooth next to the gap, and the bridge is attached to the crown.

What happens during the dental crown procedure?

Getting a dental crown is a two-part procedure. During the first appointment, one of our dentists will reshape the affected tooth to better fit the prosthetic. After numbing the tooth, the dentist will remove its outer surface with a specialized abrasive drill, and then make an impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth with paste, putty, or a digital scanner.

The impression is sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate the prosthetic tooth. Because this takes a few weeks, your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown. Once your permanent prosthetic is ready, the dentist will adjust it to fit your tooth and bite before setting it in place with a durable dental cement.

What is a zirconia crown?

Most modern dental crowns are made of porcelain to mimic the look and feel of natural teeth. However, porcelain is not the most durable material and can chip over time. The latest advancements in dental technology are leaning toward ceramic materials that combine the strength of metal with the natural-looking beauty of porcelain. Zirconia crowns are one of the most recent developments. They’re made with zirconium oxide, a ceramic material made from a white, powdered metal oxide.

What are the advantages of zirconia crowns?

Strength is the primary advantage of zirconia crowns, as zirconium has similar properties to titanium—one of the strongest metals in the world. Zirconia crowns can also be matched to your existing tooth color and layered with porcelain for an enhanced aesthetic appearance. Other advantages of zirconia crowns:

  • Enhanced strength means less tooth preparation
  • Can be bonded or cemented, offering more flexibility for your dentist
  • Can be fabricated in-office, eliminating the need for a temporary crown
  • Biocompatible materials are unlikely to cause adverse reactions with the human body

How long do zirconia crowns last?

Zirconia crowns are much more durable and long lasting than porcelain crowns. They easily withstand years of vigorous chewing and biting. At about five times the strength of porcelain, zirconia crowns are fabricated to be nearly indestructible. They are also resistant to extreme heat and cold, which lowers hypersensitivity that is common with other crown materials.

Zirconia vs. porcelain crowns

Aside from strength and durability, the main differences between zirconia crowns and porcelain crowns are appearance and cost. Zirconia crowns have a slightly more opaque look than porcelain.. As for the cost of restoration, porcelain and zirconia crowns are in the same price bracket in terms of materials, but because zirconia crowns require much less tooth preparation work, the overall cost of the procedure can actually be lower than porcelain.
