Deep cleaning in San Diego

Maintaining good oral health is pretty simple: brush and floss daily, and visit your dentist twice a year for a thorough cleaning. But even the simplest habits are easy to let slide, and irregular oral hygiene can allow bacteria to thrive and gum disease to take root. If you’ve been diagnosed with gum disease (also called periodontal disease), your dentist may recommend a deep cleaning.

Signs you might need a dental deep cleaning

Regular dental cleaning involves scraping plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth before it can cause any damage. But if there are already signs of gum disease, your dentist will need to use specialized equipment and techniques to clear out deep-down plaque and tartar so your gums can heal. Symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Gums that are swollen, inflamed, reddened, or bleed easily
  • Gums that feel “loose” and pull away from the teeth
  • Pus visible near the teeth and gums
  • Teeth that are loose, but not from any known trauma
  • Bad breath that doesn’t clear up with brushing, flossing, and mouthwash

Your dentist will also check for “pockets” that have formed around the teeth, and if they are deeper than 4 to 5 millimeters, it could indicate the presence of bacteria. Getting rid of the bacteria as soon as possible is the best way to prevent tooth loss and protect the bone structure of your jaw.

Dental deep cleaning procedures

If your dentist recommends a dental deep cleaning, there are two main procedures you can expect:

  • Scaling: Using specialized equipment—manual scaling tools, or electric or ultrasonic instruments—your dentist will remove plaque and tartar along and under the gums, much deeper than regular dental cleanings can reach.
  • Root planing: Going even deeper, your dentist will use specific dental tools or a laser to remove plaque and tartar and bacteria from deep down on the surface of the roots of your teeth. This allows your gums to shrink back to a healthy state.

Your dentist may also prescribe antibiotic medication to combat the infection causing the gum disease, plus an over-the-counter pain reliever to alleviate any lingering discomfort after the procedure. You may also need to return to the dentist for follow-up appointments to ensure your gums are healing properly, and that bacteria have not returned.

Good oral health means good overall health

Tooth decay and bone loss are only the beginning of the potential health problems you’ll face if you ignore your dentist’s recommendations for the deep cleaning. Research has shown there’s a direct link between chronic gum disease and the development of serious diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and even dementia. Deep cleaning can decrease your risk of developing these serious complications.
