Why You Should Avoid Dental Tourism

With cheaper alternatives for dental work abroad, it can be tempting to explore those options in an attempt to save a quick dollar. However, with our years of experience serving the San Diego community, we’ve heard many stories from patients that regret their “quick fix” decision. Below are some of the reasons you should avoid dental tourism.

Work quality

One of the benefits of living here in San Diego is our ability to double check the reputation of the professionals we’re trusting to do work on our teeth. At home, you have access to friends, family, and an infinite online database of reviews and testimonials. One of the problems with dental tourism is that you are never truly able to verify the quality of the work of those dentists. Although there are certainly excellent dentists everywhere, dental tourism makes it more difficult to locate these professionals and leaves you more at risk of receiving a second-rate job.

Lower work standards

It is widely known that the U.S. has much stricter health and treatment standards than many parts of the world. In other countries, this is not always the case, and dentists abroad can take advantage of this fact. Sterilization standards, infection control procedures, and patient safety standards all vary when you cross the border.

No mandatory malpractice insurance

There are various reasons why dental work may be cheaper abroad, but what you don’t pay for now, you may have to pay for in the long run if something goes wrong. Dentists abroad aren’t required to pay for certain things, such as malpractice insurance, which protects the customer from receiving poor care and requires the dentist to upkeep a certain standard of work. Without this insurance, dentists are free to work however they choose, and you’re the one that will have to pay the price.

Limited follow-up care

Follow-up care availability is important because nothing is guaranteed. If you begin to experience complications after a procedure, going in for a follow-up appointment abroad is much more difficult and timely. Not to mention if you attempt to see a local dentists after the fact, there tends to be poor communication between the dental office abroad and the new one you’re visiting at home, creating a lack of consistency and care.

At San Diego Dental Specialty Center, we provide an array of dental procedures from experienced professionals at an affordable price for everyone, so you never have to worry about traveling abroad for a quick dental fix to save a little extra money.
